Caradco Clad and Wood Window Sash Parts Restorations and Reproduction Casement, Double Hung, Single Hung, Awning Window Sash Measuring Guide Information. Bottom line .. here is what we need from you .. Number one question we get from homeowners is: How do I measure for a wood clad window sash replacement kit? A window sash replacement kit includes the wood replacement parts for your old Caradco aluminum clad, butt jointed window sash assembly or a "wood in" / "wood out" sash, and also includes the double hungs, single hungs, and the casement or awning window styles; NOTE: The "sash" is the framework around the window that holds the glass - get the mind picture of a "picture frame" -- THE PART THAT HOLD THE GLASS. The sash fits into the window frame, and is held in place by a sash track and balance system; Some sash "kits" come with a new sash with new insulated glass .. some are available without glass, some with hardware and weather strip .. some new sashes can be "prime painted" prior to shipping .. others all "raw wood" for stain finish to match the existing; Prices starting at $ 318.88 and Up - based on sizes, quantities, finishing and other specifications etc.
-
Step 1: Measuring the Width of the Window - the top, middle, and bottom to ensure all measurements; Remove any jamb liners temporarily to avoid any pulleys, weather-strips, or stops in the window frame. Record the measurements.
-
Step 1(A) Measuring the Width and Height of --- THE INSIDE VISIBLE GLASS of the Window - the top, middle, and bottom IVG; HEIGHT AND WIDTH INSIDE ( see drawing ) Record the measurements.
-
Step 1(B) Measuring the OVERALL WIDTH, HEIGHT and DEPTH - Width, Height and DEPTH of the actual "wood" SASH FRAME that makes of window: Measure outside top, middle, and bottom, HEIGHT T, M, B .. the DEPTH OR THICKNESS OF FRAMES to ensure all fit and measurements. Record the measurements.
-
Step 1(C) Measureing the O.D. - Outside dimensions or "thickness" of the insulate glass unit? Some are "boot glazed" and you can normally save this rubber item from old units; If not, they are no longer available unless in some styles that are 5/8" , 3/4", 7/8" and 11/16" OD - depending on units and availability and quantities? NORMALLY - we ask for the width and depth of "glazing channel" in the sash? Record the measurements.
-
Step 2: Measuring the Height of the Window - Open both sashes slightly and place the tape measure between the sashes. Start at the top, measure from the head jamb to the foot of the sill on the window. Make sure to eliminate any stops within the window that might obstruct a precise measurement. Start at the sill, and measure to the top of the sloped sill on the exterior side of the lower sash. Measure the height at the left, middle, and right sides of the entire window. Record the measurements.
-
Step 3: Measuring the Angles of the Window - You will want to confirm that the existing window is square by measuring both diagonals on the window. If the measurements are more than ¼” out of proportion, then an out of square adjustment in the width of the measured window must be made. To determine the adjustment, a plumb line is made from each corner to the sill or head of the window using a level. Use a plumb line that falls within the opening of the window, measure the out of square adjustment. Subtract this measurement from the smallest width measurement. Record this width measurement as the smallest width adjustment measurement.
OPTIONAL METHOD: As we always say: "Nothing is better than a sample"- so many homeowners cannot answer these questions?
Obtaining Correct Measurements for Replacement Wood Window Sashes is only "one part" of the equation process. Here are some other considerations that must be determined: Brand of Windows? Cladding Type? - "extruded aluminum" or "roll-formed clad" .. Can Cladding be "removed and reset" to new sashes? How many units are needed? .. Sizes and Shapes?
